ALSA now only on wiki, see https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/ALSA
Fix bug #454394 - Update guide to remove 2.6-only references (doc was originally written for 2.4 and 2.6 kernels)
Fix bug #427860 - Use /etc/portage for make.conf and make.profile. Old location (/etc) is still supported, this is a heads up (new default)
fix version bump
Version 3.1, fix typo regarding kernel: from 3.0 to 3.x
remove more alsa-driver cruft, leaving only the section on switching from alsa-driver to in-kernel, since alsa-driver is masked for removal from Portage
#379883 - Removing link attribute from guide element as it is not used anymore. Next step will be to remove it from DTD
Update alsa guide for the modprobe.d switch. thanks to ssuominen for the patch. bug 280468
removed deprecated udevstart paragraph, bug 251899
removed alsa-driver steps from the guide, per bug 183418, bug 207427 and other showstopper/regression bugs, and requests from the alsa & kernel teams. no one maintains or wants to maintain alsa-driver. it is the weakest link.
spacing fixes by pva, bug 177969. no content change.
misc. fixes suggested by pva on IRC, as well as removing 2.4 kernel notices (no longer in the tree)
updated alsa matrix link; old matrix is no longer maintained. bug 177384
alsa priority, bug 172490
changed modules-update command to update-modules, per the runtime warning about modules-update being deprecated. weird. seems update-modules used to be the name anyway years ago, see lpi 101 part 2.
no point in adding an example about how to add a USE flag to /etc/make.conf -- most likely thay already have customized it and blindly adding USE="foo" overwrites existing values
typo, bug 169248
only use eselect now that timidity is stable, bug 164578 (again)
typo fix, should have been module-rebuild not module rebuild
the big alsa guide update to make the whole damn thing more neutral (among other additions), fixes bugs 164573, 164576, 164577, 164578, 164593, 164597, and 164598
Removed XMMS references, bug 153830
date fix, it's july not june

s/device_node/device_mode/
Fixes for Bug 111387
Removed stupid section on catting /dev/urandom. Closes bug #119019 as well.
Removed some tabs (blame rane) **No Content Change**
Testing YosWink's repodoc, found a few wrapping issues...and fixed them. No content change.
Update grub config after building a new kernel; reported by Rasmus Lerchedahl Petersen
#102891 - Added info about the Unknown Symbol in module error thanks to dsd. Added another location to get soundfont file (from the SB CD), thanks to Robert Millan for the hint.
Fixed genkernel command options. genkernel --menuconfig is wrong.
fix a couple of typos
- killing a program with KILL (-9) signal is recommended only when it's really necesarry. Instead, using the default signal (TERM) should kill [in this case] udevd without any problems. Also, -9 may cause an unclean exit for the program (if it does not handle the signal properly). - surrounded /dev with <path>
#98772 - Addition of stuff to appease the sound team ;)
When you add something to the boot run level, you add it to the boot run level :) Indeed!
When you add something to the boot run level, you add it to the boot run level :)
#95574, #98429 - Updates + Fixes to the guide. Added sections on the Audio Group and more info regarding USB + ISA sound cards. #92711 went to RESO FIXED, so genkernel information was updated to reflect the corresponding changes. Thanks to Daniel Drake(dsd), Arun Raghavan (for ISA input), Miles Lubin, Jason Bucata, Deathwing00, alin, rane, LinuxBlues on IRC for helping with proofing and corrections.
Minor GuideXML tag fix, thanks to alin
Updated email for fox2mike
#92622, New Updated ALSA Guide
ALSA sometimes shows channels of which you can not change the volume. If you unmute those channels, it'll force the regular channels to not provide any sound anymore. The user must leave these channels muted. Thanks to Rickard Lindgren <r.lindgren@kolumbus.fi> for noticing, confirmed by Martin Schmeisser. The reason: most of the time, these channels provide a different output; enabling them disables the normal output. For instance, IEC985 unmuting disables regular output in favor of S/PDIF.
#83665 - Fix OSS compatibility issue
#80700 - amixer requires either percentage or hard value
Fixed some style typos.

add <warn> for users who are already using a 2.6 kernel, see #73159
Sometimes the Headphone also gives issues when muted (i.e. no sound). Mailed by Albert Witteveen and confirmed by a google search
