Adding redirects to handbooks as they are moved to wiki
Fix bug #511722 - Kernel installation with "make install"
Fix bugs #485042 #488844 #437338
Fix bug #453182 - Update profiles from 10.0 to 13.0
add initrd names, update kernel versions
Fix bug #414005 - Kernel binary is in arch/x86/boot directory, not arch/i386/boot. reported by Bruce Hill.
Bug #402073 - Use a more vague expression when dealing with release-specific data, this has the potential to change every week...
Fix bug #396549 - Add section on advanced portage features
update x86 handbook kernel version for latest stable
update minimal ISO sizes for bug 296397. also bump kernel version to latest stable.
Quick fixes for autobuilds and all stuff (i think) found on the autobuilds tracker bug -- x86 and amd64 only at this time. should be good for Gentoo's 10th anniversary on these two arches
x86 and amd64 received -r1 updates to the installer media, but 230998 and bug 231024
2008.0 is released
As announced on the list (http://archives.gentoo.org/gentoo-doc/msg_e721be404c6a5ae8ce5c5bf02f45381c.xml), assume all arches are using the libata framework, so sd* everywhere. includes updating block device and partition descriptions. also added a new included file for boot config (starting sshd, hdparm, etc). synced up several wayward files, including sparc. also changed/dropped usage of some now useless keys, since everyone's using sd*. lots of intensive, invasive changes. and i never even used sed once.
releng rolled out x86 beta2-r1 to fix bug 219803
Consensus is to ditch the draft disclaimer
updates and bumps for beta2. note that only HPPA (well, and mips) is not doing a beta2, as they actually had a bug-free beta1. these commits may be a few hours early, but no worries, eh, mate?
uhh, looks like i backed up too many directories when i made that gnome/metadoc 2.22 commit, so the x86 and amd64 commits went in at the same time. that's okay though, as the filesizes for 2008.0_beta1 were fixed. so now here's the (missed) version bump for that change. :)
some edits for the gnome 2.22 upgrade guide as requested by leio. i hardly had to make any; those gnome guys are getting quite good at GuideXML, so kudos to them. :) also replaced the gnome 2.20 upgrade guide in our metadata.xml with the new guide.
release time. note that since this is beta1, the release dir and stage/media names have been adjusted accordingly. also, the handbooks are marked with a disclaimer=draft, so once the final is out, that will be removed and the release names adjusted. in the mean time, these are live. the beta is officially released. no, it's not april fools, but it is april 1st. :)
Made profile displayed by "ls -FGg /etc/make.profile" match default from stage3
x86 minimal iso filesize was not what i was originally told, and it seems that the iso is renamed -r1 because of a fixed bootsplash.
2007.0 release is here; final changes and new docs
Matched hb-install-stage.xml with handbook architecture

proper English fix: s/stadium/state, no content change
updated stop-start-daemon documentation for bug 122786
2006.1 networked docs are in. portage handbook still untouched per separate bugs. thanks to all the hard work, guys. blame me if something is wrong (and please fix quickly) :)

#60806 - Add information on the various reasons why a package can be masked
#60176 - Adding SLOT and depclean to the Gentoo Handbook
#61033 DISTCC_DIR is automatically handled by portage.
#60175 - Various fixes to the Portage information
Okay, turning back to the "old" profile system. The thread on -dev@ doesn't give me a good feeling about cascading profiles (pvdabeel sais that it needs some updates, beejay sais it needs testing, solar sais the old one is obsoleted and should be removed, zhen sais an updated catalyst needs to be pushed). So this doesn't feel like "yes, switch them all over" just yet (especially since this is a arch-wide part of our installation instructions).
#59583 - Add CFLAGS for PPC64
#50773 - Use links2 only (to not confuse users too much) I've mailed gentoo-releng and asked if there were any architectures that don't have links2 (well, not exactly in those words, but arches that don't have it should have replyed anyway). Only beejay answered and said all LiveCDs have links2 ("at least x86 has") and none of the other arches replied. So I'm not going to ask it over and over again. I'll just commit and watch the bugs flow in :p They've had their chance.
Use bootstrap-cascade.sh instead of bootstrap; the old one is broken (did you know this?)
Fix the "sysklogd already provides virtual/logger" issue when choosing another system logger
#59680 - Adding instructions on reading the documentation while installing
We don't have to env-update && source /etc/profile after editing /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf's CHOST setting as we aren't inside our chrooted environment yet. The command itself is ran anyway right after chrooting, so this can be removed from the handbook. We had this previously when editing /etc/make.conf was inside the chrooted environment.
Add "might" to the phraze about using "genkernel --menuconfig all"
Fixed link to networking terms and circular links in AMD64 & x86 Added missing reboot step from AMD64 & x86
#59484: mirrorselect outputs html junk, grep on GENTOO_MIRRORS
#58200 - Add Gentoo/PPC64 Handbook #47705 - Use grub-install instead of grub's interactive shell Move bootloader instructions to the end of the installation instructions
Further #41658 fixes - the bug contained several bugreports
Fix conf.d/05gcc to env.d/05gcc
#50289 - Move mounting of /proc right before the chrooting. This also takes care of the errors users receive while unpacking the stage tarballs. Apparently logics is something the crowd wants less
Change name of "Software Availability" to "Working with Masked Packages"
#41658 - Inform the users about the various /etc/portage files
#57892 - Fix /etc/hosts for single-host environment
#50773 - Add a few phrazes to make it easier for the users to make a choice
#54222 - Use metalog as default example for loggers
#49504 - Use gentoo or smp if you want 2.4 or 2.6
#57685 - Reword kernel choices for networkless installations
#57682 - Fix Processor Family example to be in sync with our example 2.4 kernel
#57330 - Make it more clear that using a portage snapshot from the CD is only required if you do a stage3 networkless installation
#56087 - make.conf.example is used for example values, not make.conf
#55656 - Update ccache instructions
#53272 - Reload environment variables after altering the CHOST variable
#58665 - 2004.2 stage3 contains the sysklogd logger
#58921 - Windows requires that its partition is active
#57943 - USE="-java" isnt needed anymore
OOo now requires even more space to compile; setting from "almost 3G" to "at least 3G" for the size of the /var partition
Add two words to inform that SATA uses the sdaX construction instead of hdaX
Small tune-up: if you use comments inside a code listing, use a # in front of them; some users tend to literally type over everything
Add <i>...</i> for the example md5sum command in hb-install-stage
Add gpg instructions for checking the validity of the ISOs
Desktop documentation is now separate
The md5sum checking command in the handbooks is an example for the x86 architecture while the other architectures use the same file (i.e. others see the same example). I made it prominent that this is merely an example.
was missing a trailing .
Forgot to adjust version/date tags
Move over files from the draft/ directory. 2004.2 is released :)
#57290: ACCEPT_KEYWORDS on the command line is evil. Use /etc/portage/package.keywords instead
#57937: removed occurrences of xfs-sources, gaming-sources and [*] /dev/pts
#57264: updated output from env-update #57266: typo (s/socalled/so-called/)
#56317: Mention the dhcpcd -HD option and throw in a note about -N as well
#56065: make kernel options easier to find in 2.4 & 2.6 kernels
#56333:use md5sum.exe to check MD5 on a W machine
#54877 - Add ramdisk statement
#56066 - Inform about vmlinuz for 2.6 kernel users
Remove digital signature verification as the key used to sign the ISOs has been revoked and the digitale signature files have been removed from the mirrors
Remove noauto for /boot and tell the users a bit more about this phenomenon :p
#54612 - Users should use their kernel/initrd filenames and not our examples; some ppl dont seem to get this
#53032 - Move out burning instructions to the Gentoo FAQ. Keep the cdrecord/k3b instructions though
#53514 - Mention the importance of the kernel naming in the manual configuration
#53086 - Add user to the tty group
#51978 - Inform users with multiple network cards that there are multiple network cards... yes, silly, I know, but it makes sense ;p
#51612 - Make emerge-webrsync command less ambiguous
Filter out rogue line from mirrorselect that b0rks /etc/make.conf See #52264
#43778 - SYNC can only contain a single mirror
#49378 - Add Processor Family note
#49376 - Add cryptographic instructions
#49552 - Add note that certain warnings during the extraction of the stages can be ignored
#49831 - Use relative links for kernel source; some ebuilds break otherwise
#50049 - Make the stage3-<subarch> name more prominent, some users think it is not an example but a reallife command
#49994 - /mnt/cdrom is automatically created by baselayout
#49994 - No --usepkg for grub
#50324 - Add information regarding --deep flag and dependency checking using emerge world
#50520 - Mention that the package cd is only useful with stage3+GRP installations
#50520 - Make it more prominent that stage1 and stage2 cannot be used for networkless installations and that stage3 does
#50279: fixed single occurrence of 'vcron', should be vixie-cron
You can only use a stage3 when doing a networkless installation
#49692 - Apparently users take jokes far too seriously
Using md5sum -c instead of just md5sum
GNUs GCC documentation URL has changed
2004.1 release. Moving docs from draft/ to correct space. Hopefully this goes without any issues *crosses fingers*
#47834 - Dont copy a symbolic link but the file it points to
Its arch/release, not release/arch
#35366 - Tell the user how to rebuild his system with new USE flags
Regarding portage update: can safely ignore it -> should ignore it
Only vixie-cron is available for networkless installations
msyslog isnt available for networkless installations, we should only list those. I added a sentence that others might be available as well so people dont submit bugreports against this :)
fix k3b fluency -- it was too confusing
Refrase on the defaults regarding the use of mirrorselect
Update hb-install-about to point to the releng page instead of just the x86 errata as this file is used by all architectures.
The use of "he/she" and "his/her" isn't recommended. It's ugly and better ways are known such as the use of "they" and "their" (even if it's not plural). Okay, English is a weird language, but I'm learning :) Thanks to Xavier for the information
Dont assume users are masculin
Add note that genkernel cannot be used on a networkless installation
#46548 - Add K3B burning instructions to the burning instructions
Mental note: never listen to original authors when they suggest to change our installation instructions. Apparently the use of "grub-install" for Gentoo just doesn't work period. The forum is filled with people telling that it doesn't work and I've got mails too. I've mailed the GRUB ppl about this. Anyway, this reverts the instructions back to the old instructions -- translators can just run "cvs update -j rev1 -j rev2 hb-install-x86-bootloader.xml" with rev1 and rev2 the latest and one-before latest revision to revert their changes. Same for hb-install-amd64-bootloader.xml. I did keep the links to the GRUB manual and FAQ though so you'll have to readd it after reverting.
#46828 - Use of grub-install instead of grub its prompt
Fix
Removing
Handbook got killed. Added missing handbook-ARCH.xml files.
